ليلة في المغرب

Marrakesh is one of those rare places that stays in your heart long after you leave.

Our story

In Morocco, the best rooms face inward.

A riad is a Moroccan house built around a courtyard. It keeps its back to the street and does its living inside. Marrakesh LA works the same way: you come in off Melrose Avenue and the traffic stays outside.

Chef Hicham Foual grew up cooking in his family's kitchen in Casablanca and trained there professionally. He cooked for royal households, led kitchen teams at hotels in Casablanca and Tunisia, and ran his own cooking school for ten years before moving to Los Angeles in 2011.

He started here as a caterer, cooking for weddings and private dinners across the city. The restaurant came later. The food is the same: tagines braised for hours, couscous with seven vegetables, and mint tea at the end of the meal.

The riad

Dining room & courtyard

Sit up front by the windows onto Melrose, or further in, in the courtyard, where it's quieter.

The courtyard at night: a zellige-tiled fountain in green, white and red, ringed by potted palms and lantern light.
The courtyard fountain
Guests at low banquettes in the warm-lit lounge, a kilim runner down the centre of the room.
The lounge
A gold mint tea service on a brass tray with fresh mint and small glasses.
Mint tea
A corner of the courtyard: exposed brick, a palm in a terracotta pot, a Berber rug and a leather pouf.
The courtyard
A whole braised lamb shoulder in an unglazed clay dish.
Cooked in clay
Grilled shrimp in a spiced tomato sauce with green olives and lemon, served in a steel pan.
From the grill
A round wedding table dressed with white flowers, candles, crystal and small plates of Moroccan salads.
A catering spread of tagines, couscous and salads on a long table.
